Summer Updates

Welcome! Earlier this summer, we officially launched the Web Science @ Georgia Tech website. We are also pleased to announce that Yahoo! is sponsoring the Invited Lecture Series for the upcoming academic year. The lectures and Web Science teas will resume in the fall.

Web Science Professor Discusses Preteen Identity on the Web

As interactive websites for children proliferate, more and more kids and "tweens" are developing alter egos to explore life in cyberworld. “Get used to it,” said School of Interactive Computing professor Amy Bruckman, who studies how children interact with computers. “Identity formation is a key part of what kids go through, and these sites offer that opportunity.” Source: The New York Times.

New Web Science Course Offered

Associate Professor Milena Mihail will be offering a new web science course during the fall 2008 semester, CS 4803 - WWW: Science, Technology and Applications. The course will focus on key World Wide Web technologies and applications, such as information retrieval, recommendation systems and peer-to-peer networks, as well as cover the societal and business impacts of the World Wide Web. Guest lectures will be given by other Georgia Tech web science faculty, as well as scientists, managers and Georgia Tech alumni working in the Web industry.

GVU Center Hosts Journalism 3G: A Symposium on Computation + Journalism

This weekend, the GVU Center hosted Journalism 3G: A Symposium on Computation + Journalism. More than 200 people—a mix of academics and professionals, editors and reporters, journalists and Web developers—came together to talk about the ways technology is changing journalism.
